I recently caught some of the Fear of Men’s set when they supported The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart at The Ruby Lounge in Manchester earlier this month. Although I didn’t see enough of the Brighton band’s show to form much of an opinion on it, a song I’d already previously heard prior to the gig titled ‘Descent’ stood out a mile. Singer Jessica Weiss’ doeful vocals are in from the get-go, giving the song an intense immediateness: laid on top of a subtle guitar line, a constant rumbling bass and energetic drums. I must have listened to it 50 times, you have a turn.
