I’ve been listening to Sun Kil Moon’s latest album Benji quite a lot recently, it was released earlier this year but I only stumbled across the name whilst checking out this year’s Greenman Festival lineup.
The Sun Kil Moon moniker belongs to artist and producer Mark Kozelek and Benji is his 6th studio album, the record has received widespread acclaim from music critics and rightly so, it’s an intense and moving piece of work. I wanted to write a review of the whole album but between laziness and a lack of time I decided to just focus on my favourite track, ‘Carissa’.
Carissa is Kozelek’s second cousin, a 35 year old mother of 2 who died last year in a freak accident involving an exploding aerosol can. The song tells the story in great detail, from Kozelek reminiscing about Carissa’s and his childhood, to him hearing the news of her death then on to the singer trying to make some sense of it all. Delivered over a backdrop of delicate acoustic guitar, Kozelek’s Springsteen-esque drawl and his filterless write-what-you-see approach to songwriting is both refreshing and endearing.
