New Soundz #8: Woods – Shepherd

It seems I well and truly missed the boat when it comes to Brooklyn band Woods. The folk rock group formed in 2005 and their latest LP With Light and With Love is their eighth studio album; they certainly slipped under my radar.

From the first minute of playing With Light and With Love I knew it was going to be my thing, Woods’ sound is quite similar to that of James Mercer’s band The Shins but their tendency to have long jams reminds me a lot of late 60’s/early 70’s group Love.

I have chosen album opener ‘Shepherd’ to share with you today, the song has laid back country feel to it, it bobs along on a sea of slide guitar, brushed snare and subtle piano with singer-guitarist Jeremy Earl’s effect-heavy vocals tying it all together.
